  • Will the IRS waive interest and penalties?

Generally the IRS will not waive interest owed on a delinquent tax liabilty.

Sometimes the IRS will waive the penalty assessed for a delinquent tax return.  To get the penalty waived, a reasonable cause for the delinquency must be shown.  Usually, the reasonable cause is a situation beyond the taxpayer's control.
